It all started with sand in her shoes...
Sand that I reminded her gets poured out in the front yard and not in the dining room. Ruth is mighty in spirit but weak in muscle and she never gets the front door to close properly. Wind and rain have been beating against the house so much these past two days that I made sure I reminded her to go back and give the door a good push. She grunted and shoved and we both decided it was good enough.
Hours later, I laid on the couch watching Ruth and Cutie chase a new ball. Laughter filled the house. Then, a gust of wind must've caught the front door because it slowly creaked open and before I could catch myself... I'd done it. I'd looked up to the familiar sound of Ben coming home. Only to remember he's not coming home right now. He's still extremely far away.
And that made the missing hurt that much more.
